Are you thinking of buying a new TV and want the latest and greatest? The very latest does not have to be the absolute best. It’s something we’re seeing right now with 8K resolution TVs getting worse ratings than their 4K counterparts. Let’s go over why you’re probably best off staying away from those incredibly high-definition TVs.
More pixels but worse image
Although an 8K resolution TV offers four times as many pixels as a 4K TV, rarely do 8K TVs measure up in other aspects. Because there are so many more pixels involved, it’s easy for the backlight to simply not be able to offer the same high maximum brightness or the same color volume.

This results in the higher resolution TVs often falling behind when it comes to things like contrast, which affects how HDR content looks. Here we see the 4K unit winning quite a lot in aspects such as contrast, blooming, HDR brightness and color volume.
8K TVs are more expensive to operate
Unsurprisingly, it takes more to drive such a huge number of pixels. In today’s situation, where electricity prices are hardly low, it is good to know how high power consumption an 8K TV can have.
In the Rting test, there is a real difference in power consumption on an 8K and a 4K TV. The 4K TV draws an average of 61 W, while the 8K sibling is at 124 W. In terms of the TVs’ maximum power consumption, it is 175 W and 309 W, respectively. Similar figures are found in this test which compares an 8K and a 4K TV from Hisense.
The price tag
While the cheapest 8K TV on Prisjakt is listed with a price tag of SEK 10,000, prices quickly go up to double and even higher if we don’t count units on sale. However, there are equally large 4K TVs to be found for under SEK 5,000, if we look at the very cheapest units.
Let’s look at the previously mentioned TVs from Samsung begin QN90B of 65 inches with 4K resolution for SEK 21,300. The 8K sibling QN900B in the same size, however, start at SEK 60,000 right now.
