Most people have moles. They don’t bother anyone, and such people live quietly with them all their lives. But for some they become a real nuisance and make them want to get rid of them as quickly as possible. But how much do we know about moles? Surgeon Sergei Varev, a specialist at the multidisciplinary laser surgery clinic L-MED, answered questions about skin formations for the Tula News Service.

As the expert explains, what we used to call moles actually includes a large number of different neoplasms, such as nevus, papilloma, keratoma, keratopapilloma, melanoma, fibroma and others. For a non-specialist, they may be no different and look similar to each other, but it is important to differentiate them into at least two categories: benign and malignant.
“It is believed that a group of benign neoplasms can degenerate into malignant ones when exposed to certain factors, such as trauma, ultraviolet radiation, hereditary predisposition, and so on”“, comments the surgeon.
According to Varev, damaging moles can be dangerous, since when traumatized, even benign formations risk “degenerating” into a malignant neoplasm.
At the same time, the expert noted that there are strong misconceptions regarding damage to moles. For example, that the breakdown of a mole can provoke the separation of a blood clot. Neoplasms are nourished by small capillaries, in which blood clots cannot form, much less enter the systemic bloodstream.
But you shouldn’t apply a tattoo to moles, since the process of applying a design is actually a traumatization that can provoke the transformation of benign neoplasms into malignant ones.
“The reasons that can lead to the degeneration of neoplasms into malignant ones are: exposure to ultraviolet radiation, hormonal disorders in the body, hereditary predisposition, lifestyle and trauma. In addition, the more often traumatization occurs, the higher the risk of degeneration,” says the doctor.
As the surgeon notes, any formations can be removed. However, the technique is selected individually.
Varev also said that there are an extremely large number of myths around moles, which cause unnecessary unrest among ordinary people. Moreover, misconceptions often come from the realm of mysticism. For example, the opinion that if you remove a mole, your destiny will change. Or that if you tie a mole with horsehair, it will fall off. Also common misconceptions are the belief that it is better not to touch or remove moles, and that they can go away on their own.
The Tula News Service also talked about why the corners of the lips crack and how to treat it.
