Why is there no room number 420 in hotels around the world? – 2024-08-23 07:06:30

You’ve heard of hotels avoiding rooms with the number 13 because it’s considered unlucky. But some are forced to remove the number 420. It is believed that this is due to its links with cannabis culture. The number 420 refers to April 20 (4/20 in the American form). It has become an international holiday for smoking and celebrating marijuana. Now they will understand why.

In an effort to prevent weed enthusiasts from taking their room signs as souvenirs, some hotels are taking extreme measures, writes commercialrealestate.

A hotel in Colorado, USA – the first state to legalize marijuana – was forced to carve a number into its door to prevent it from being stolen. Meanwhile, another hotel renamed its room 419+1, banning the number altogether. Another hotel simply skipped this number for the rooms and went from 419 to 421.

But the problem also affects other sectors.

Last year, the New York Daily News reported that officials in Colorado were forced to replace the “Mile 420” sign with “Mile 419.99” after it similarly became a target for thieves.

Why is the 420 such a big deal?

Cannabis users are celebrating marijuana on April 20 at 4:20 p.m. But why? There are many theories behind the origin of 4/20, including:

• This is the day Bob Marley died. This is not true; he died on November 5th.
• April 20 is also not his birthday, but it is Adolf Hitler’s (historians remain divided on the extent of the Nazi leader’s weed consumption).
• This is the police radio code for “smoking weed in progress”. False.
Police insist 420 means absolutely nothing.
• Refers to the number of chemical compounds in marijuana. Not true – they are 315.

The real reason, or at least the one most people seem to agree on, is this. In the seventies, a group of high school students in San Rafael, California, regularly gathered for a joint next to the Louis Pasteur statue on campus at precisely 4:20 p.m. “Louis 420” was their code word.
