Economic observer from Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, Lukman Hakim, is of the view that this phenomenon is caused by a number of interrelated factors.

He said, during the Covid-19 pandemic, people’s purchasing power is low, so the supply of cooking oil is low.

As soon as the pandemic began to subside somewhat, the demand for cooking oil rose again.

“It turns out that this is not only in Indonesia, but also in the world. The price of CPO (crude palm oil) increased. Law demand and supply (demand and supply) is ongoing,” he said when contacted Kompas.comFriday (18/3/2022).

When demand starts to rise, the supply of cooking oil is still low.

In addition, cooking oil is an oligopoly commodity.

“My guess is, it appears common sense trader. They start to pile up in a matter of time. Finally, instinctively, each of the big traders held back and raised prices,” he said.

Then came the HET policy. Then, cooking oil became scarce.

“My guess is that when goods (cooking oil) are scarce, prices are already high. As soon as HET appears, there is a market reaction. Because the HET is lower than the market price. Those people then detained him,” he said.

Then, once the HET was revoked, the stock of packaged cooking oil was again abundant.
