Why is the Wuling Air ev Cheaper in Thailand Than in Indonesia?

Wuling Air ev ‘made’ in Cikarang launched in Thailand. Even so, the selling price of Wuling Air ev in Thailand is actually cheaper than in Indonesia. How could that be?

PT SGMW Indonesia’s Wuling Air ev penetrates the Thai market. Yes, orders for tiny electric cars that can travel up to 300 km have just opened in Thailand. Interestingly, even though it was imported directly from the PT SGMW Indonesia factory in the Cikarang area, the price for Wuling Air ev in Thailand is actually cheaper than Indonesia.

On the official Thai Wuling website, Air Ev is sold starting at 395,000 baht or the equivalent of IDR 168.8 million from the normal price of 405,000 baht which is equivalent to IDR 173 million. Meanwhile, the most expensive Wuling Air ev is sold for 485,000 baht which is equivalent to Rp. 207 million. (1 baht = IDR 427.41).

In more detail, here is a price list for Wuling Air ev sold in Thailand:

1. Wuling Air ev Standard Range: 395,000 baht (Rp. 168.8 million)
2. Wuling Air ev Standard Range Extended: 415,000 baht (Rp. 177.3 million)
3. Wuling Air ev Long Range: 465,000 baht (Rp. 198.7 million)
4. Wuling Air ev Long Range Extended: 485,000 baht (Rp. 207.2 million)

As a comparison, Wuling Air ev in Indonesia costs the cheapest IDR 243 million and the most expensive IDR 299.5 million. After receiving a 10% VAT subsidy from the government, Wuling Air ev was sold as the cheapest for Rp. 221.5 million and the most expensive for Rp. 272.9 million. If you pay attention, even though the normal price for Wuling Air ev in Thailand is still cheaper than in Indonesia.

At normal prices, the most expensive version is only around IDR 207.2 million. Meanwhile in Indonesia, at normal prices, they are sold starting at IDR 243 million. How come the price is cheaper than in Indonesia even though the car has CBU status?

Wuling Motors Indonesia Brand and Marketing Director Dian Asmahani explained that the price difference was due to a different incentive policy from the Thai government.

“We see this because of differences in price structures and electric vehicle incentive policies that apply in Thailand and Indonesia,” explained Dian when contacted by detikOto, Monday (3/7/2023).

For your information, the Thai government provides subsidies of 18,000-150,000 baht per unit of electric vehicle, or the equivalent of Rp. 7.69 million to Rp. 64 million. Under this scheme, a subsidy of 70,000 baht (equivalent to Rp. 29 million) will be given to passenger electric cars priced under 2 million baht (Rp. 854 million) with a battery capacity of 10-30 kWh. Then subsidies of 150,000 baht (Rp. 64 million) will be given to electric cars with a battery capacity of more than 30 kWh, both domestically assembled (CKD) and CBU.
