Silvia Pinal, considered one of the great figures of Mexican cinema and culture, is about to turn 93, being the last “living Diva of the golden age of Mexican cinema.”
Born on September 12, 1931 in Guaymas, Sonora, Pinal began her career in theater in the 1940s before making the leap to film with her first role in the film “Bamba” (1948).
Pinal’s status is due to her impressive career in the golden age of national cinema, where she became an iconic figure of theatre, television and film, which led her to face several challenges, including traveling to Spain and looking for Luis Buñuel to work with him.
“I am going to say this with great vanity, but I chose Buñuel, not him me. When I saw his work I loved it, I fell in love with his cinema, his black humour, his way of being and I knew that I would not rest until I was directed by him and I succeeded,” said the actress in an interview some time ago.
The actress not only became the muse of the Spanish filmmaker, but also won the coveted Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1961 for her film Viridiana.
