If your car has a timing belt, not a chain, it must be replaced after a certain period or a significant number of kilometers. But why is replacing the timing belt so expensive?
The costs for replacing the belt are easily 350-500 euros, depending on the car. But the parts can often be purchased for less than 100 euros. Where does the rest of the money go?
Why replacing a timing belt is expensive
Replacing the timing belt is therefore not expensive due to the parts. Although the guide rollers and the water pump are often included when replacing the belt, the costs do not really include the material.
In the animation below you can see that the belt is (often) deep in the engine. This means that a workshop employee can easily spend three hours on it. An average Bovag garage charges around 60 to 80 euros per hour as a workshop rate. At a dealership, the costs per hour are often higher.
Save money on the belt
Saving in any way on replacing your timing belt is highly inadvisable. If the belt is not replaced in time, there is a greater chance that it will break.
Although many manufacturers say that a timing chain is maintenance-free, it often happens that after many kilometers and years the chain still needs to be replaced. Nevertheless, a chain is more maintenance-free than a belt. (Image: Unsplash)
If the timing belt breaks, your engine will be extensively damaged. In short, just stick to your car’s maintenance interval. Although this of course does not only apply to the timing belt.

How long does a timing belt last?
A belt usually lasts around 100,000 kilometers or 5 years, depending on the car.
If you really want to save some money, request different prices from garages. Please note, always choose a good garage, cheap is often expensive when it comes to car maintenance.
