Why is Microsoft giving up its stores?

Microsoft physical store? Soon there won’t be a single one. The Redmond giant has decided to close all such points around the world.

Microsoft closes all its stationary stores

Microsoft will close all its stationary stores around the world. Only in four locations – in New York, London, Sydney and (home) Remond – will the points remain, but they will be turned into “experience centers”. And this is not just a change of name, because in fact we will not even buy products of the American giant.

Microsoft’s decision may surprise, especially that official stores among technology companies have become a kind of symbol of prestige. Apple, Samsung, DJI, Sony, LG or even Xiaomi – there are plenty of companies that open such facilities to show that they are brands that cannot be underestimated, and at the same time to provide the highest level of service to their customers.

Microsoft learned this from lockdown

The world situation has given the Redmond giant a lesson that there is no more demand for physical stores. Microsoft also apparently recognized that it is already a sufficiently recognizable brand, so it does not have to promote itself in this way, and at the same time prefers to sell digital, especially since up to 1.2 billion people a month use its online stores from 190 countries.

This may surprise, but Microsoft has a plan that despite closing all stores, none of the employees do not have to lose their jobs. Apparently, it has been prepared for a long time, because the elimination of points has already been considered – the pandemic only accelerated the decision.

Is this really a good decision?

As a result of the pandemic, Microsoft, as well as many other giants, had to close their stores for some time. Apple has already opened some of them and after a while had to close them again. It’s a sign that offline buying is not the safest step. Of course, shopping on the Internet is not without flaws, but it seems that the manufacturer of Xbox and Surfaces decided that there are less than advantages.

Microsoft’s adventure with physical stores did not last particularly long. The first such point was opened in 2009 and we have never seen it open in our country. As with other brands’ stores, they were more focused on presenting their capabilities than on offering products. That is why part of the environment considers this decision an error. Do you think this is also so?
