Why is it so slow to cross the Brooklyn Bridge by car?

A new study reveals that travel times across the Brooklyn Bridge have increased since a bike lane was installed on this road.

The report from analytics company Inrix found that the average speed of cars on the bridge heading into Manhattan fell by just over 7 miles per hour between 2019 and 2022, a 28% drop.

That slowdown came after the Department of Transportation converted one of the car lanes into a bike lane.

On the Brooklyn side of the bridge, where no bike lane has been installed: Those speeds dropped just a mile per hour.

A Department of Transportation spokesperson said: “This project has brought historic improvements to this iconic bridge, even if it means drivers heading to Manhattan will have a slightly slower ride. We recognized that early on.”
