In winter we have a very high level of pollution at night, there is a factor called thermal inversion, says Cezara Copacianu, Airly’s communications manager.

“This is a phenomenon that occurs mostly in winter, which is why we have very high pollution levels at night,” he said at a conference.
What is really happening?
“During the day we pollute and in the evening, since normally we would expect the pollution to increase in the atmosphere, it actually goes down. All the pollution during the day that we have produced reaches our level and we breathe it during the winter.” Copacianu also said.
That’s why, he says, it’s not really recommended to open the window in winter to ventilate the house at night.
What are the most polluted cities?
In Romania we have less polluted and more polluted cities.
“Constanța and Tulcea, for example, are less polluted cities thanks to their location near the sea. In Bucharest, Ilfov, Iași, Covasna and Dolj are very polluted cities”, said the Airly representative.
The reasons for the pollution, he says, vary from context to context.
“If we look at the big cities, we are talking in particular of heavy traffic. Generally this is the main factor. If we look at the smaller and heavily polluted cities, even if they are not traffic, we can speak of an intensely polluting activity. We can discuss the operation of a factory, “Cezara Copacianu said.
