All the August 13th is International Left-Handers Day around the world. The commemorative day was promoted by two world organizations: Lefthanders Internacional Inc y The Left-Handers Club.
The objective of the date is to try to raise awareness of the shortcomings and difficulties that left-handed people face in a world designed for right-handers. It is estimated that, 10% of the world’s population – approximately 790 million people worldwide -, they have their left hand as the predominant one.
Why is International Left-Handers Day celebrated on August 13?
The date was set, for the first time, in 1992 by the Left-Handers Cluba London-based organization whose mission is to promote inclusion of left-handed people in all areas. Thus, the objective of the day was to raise awareness among the population about the difficulties and advantages which represent using the left hand.

Throughout history, left-handed people have been encouraged to use their right hand to write.
Since then, efforts have also been made to promote the Creation of instruments and spaces suitable for left-handed people to handle, especially during childhood. In this way, the celebration already takes 32 uninterrupted years commemorating this particular feature.
The two most recognized organizations worldwide are Lefthanders International Inc and The Left-Handers Club. The first of these was created on August 13, 1975 by the American military Dean R CampbellOn the other hand, the “Left-Handed Club” was created in 1990 in the city of London.
Which countries have the largest number of left-handed people?
According to statistics, the countries with the largest number of people who are left-handed are: Netherlands (13,23%), USA (13,2%), Belgium (13,1%), Canada (12,8%), United Kingdom (12,24%), Ireland (11,65%) y Swiss (11.61%). In total, it is estimated that approximately 10% of the world’s population are left-handed.

The flip side of this are those countries that have a low rate of left-handed people. This may be linked to the characteristics of their society, the lack of acceptance and inclusion in front of this group of people or the impositions in the educational system which, for example, forced the left handed people a learning to write with your right handdespite the difficulties this might present.
Why is a person left-handed?
Experts from the Oxford University They investigated what determined whether a person was right- or left-handed. According to the results, this depended on specific components found within DNA: “Of the four genetic regions that were identified, three of them were associated with proteins involved in brain development and structure.
In particular, these proteins were related to microtubules, which are part of the internal scaffolding of cells, called the cytoskeleton, which guides the construction and functioning of cells in the body“, they developed from the educational institution.
In this way, it was possible to determine that there is a morphological difference between the brains of right-handed and left-handed people, especially in the regions associated with language. In addition, the study revealed that the connection that left-handed people have between these regions specialized areas in both hemispheres results in a coordinated action which could mean a genetic advantage when performing verbal tasks.
