2024 – HARDWARE DAY. National Hardware Store Day is celebrated in commemoration of the birth in 1905 of the Association of Hardware Stores, Paint Stores and Bazaars of the Argentine Republic.

Today known as the Chamber of Hardware and Related Businesses of the Argentine Republic (Cafara), the association brings together the hardware sector and companies in the country linked to the activity.

“The aim of the entity is the defence and development of the hardware retail trade. The vision is that Argentine SMEs and Mini SMEs can develop their activities to the maximum of their commercial and professional potential,” the entity explains on its website.

1859 – JEAN JAURÈS. Jean Jaurès, historian, teacher and socialist leader, founder of the newspaper “L’Humanité” and defender of pacifist positions, was born in the French commune of Castres. He was assassinated in July 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War.

1920 – LEON FERRARI. Visual artist León Ferrari was born in Buenos Aires. His work was aimed at denouncing abuses of power and intolerance in society. At the time of his death in 2013, he was one of the five most provocative and important visual artists in the world, according to the American newspaper The New York Times.

León Ferrari developed an artistic career that had no pause. His extensive production was characterized by irreverence and constant criticism of power and religion.

1940 – EDUARDO GALEANO. Uruguayan writer and journalist Eduardo Galeano, one of the most influential intellectuals of the left and Latin American literature, was born in Montevideo. His best-known books, Open Veins of Latin America (1971) and Memory of Fire (1986), were translated into twenty languages.

1949 – JOSE PEKERMAN. Former footballer and coach José Pekerman was born in the Entre Ríos municipality of Villa Domínguez. He was a world champion with the Argentine under-20 team in the tournaments of Qatar 1995, Malaysia 1997 and Argentina 2001. He is the most successful coach in the history of the under-20 world tournaments.

1950 – RACING CLUB. Racing Club’s “Presidente Perón” stadium, also known as “El alambre de Avellaneda”, is inaugurated. It was in the match that Racing beat Vélez Sarsfield 1-0 with a goal by Llamil Simes, a victory that took them to the top of the 1950 Championship.

1971 – JUAN D. PERÓN. General and former president Juan Domingo Perón receives at his Madrid residence in Puerta de Hierro the remains of his wife, María Eva Duarte, who had been kidnapped from the headquarters of the General Confederation of Labor and smuggled out of Argentina after the coup in 1955.

1991 – FRANK CAPRA. Italian-American filmmaker Frank Capra, winner of three Oscars and director of the film “It’s a Wonderful Life,” considered a cinema classic, dies in the town of La Quinta (California, USA).

1997 – MARTIN PALERMO. Striker Martín Palermo makes his debut for Boca Juniors in Boca’s 1-0 victory over Cruzeiro of Brazil in the 1997 South American Super Cup match played at La Bombonera stadium. With 236 goals, Palermo is the top scorer in Boca’s history.

2009 – MICHAEL JACKSON. The remains of American musician Michael Jackson are interred in the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery 70 days after the death of the popular pop music star.

2014 – GYMNASTICS – STUDENTS. Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata and Estudiantes de La Plata tied 0-0 in a match of the 2014 Copa Sudamericana, the first derby between La Plata and Estudiantes in an international tournament.
