“Improve working conditions”this is what Jean-Michel Sterdyniak, the general secretary of the National Union of Occupational Health Professionals, advises. Asked by France CultureMonday October 28, he spoke about the government’s desire to review the rules for sick leave in the public service.
The executive wishes to extend waiting time for sick leavebut also limit their remuneration to 90% instead of 100%. To explain this measure, the authorities point to increasing absenteeism in the public sector. For Jean-Michel Sterdyniak, it is of a false problem. Indeed, according to him, this increase is due “largely to deterioration of working conditions in business »and in particular to the risks “psycho-social linked to new work organizations”.

Absenteeism, but also “presenteeism”
The general secretary of the SNPST explains, for his part, that the increase in sick leave mainly reflects and “discomfort at work”. According to him, if a person who is on sick leave does not feel good in their company, they “will not tend to return to work more quickly”. He also points to another phenomenon: “presenteeism”and believes that many employees continue to work sick today “to avoid losing money and for fear of reprisals”. The ball is now back in the government’s court.
