Why is everyone cutting out luxury bags on social media?

We are in 2017 and the Internet has taken on a still incomprehensible passion: cutting out more or less improbable objects with a white-hot knife. We could then obviously count on the Youtube-game of the time to push things far, even too far… At a time when Kylie Jenner was becoming a star and Rihanna was just launching Fenty Beauty, the platform venerated the now decried – at rightly – Jeffree Star. In January 2017, the beauty guru armed himself with his knife in order to cut out, for no reason, a Chanel bag. Everywhere the hearts of fashionistas were bleeding in unison. But the shocking idea paid off, earning him more than 11 million views. It’s that the provocation is total: if the increase in prices at Chanel made the dreams of bags from rue Cambon even more inaccessible, at the time already, they were far from being within everyone’s reach. Since then, we thought the it-bags were out of business. Until TikTok bring up new Internet users armed with scissors in our feed. We were afraid that our worst nightmares would return, until we discovered that these new cutters had more noble purposes.

At daggers drawn

The first seemed harmless to us at first glance. On Twitter, Kellie Ford made the buzz in 2021 by sharing the video of a TikTok where we see her transforming a “shopping bag” Louis Vuitton (understand the cardboard bag that we receive to put our purchases) in real handbag. To do this, she cuts it out before laminating it and adding handles. Not a new idea but one that has gained popularity. Since then, it has been regularly featured on the platform. Here, no precious leather bag hurt but only DIY experiments on paper bags that many would have ended up throwing away. We are relieved.

The second hurt us much more. When Tanner Leatherstein appears on our TikTok, it is to tear apart a Bottega Veneta bag. Heresy? Yes… but not really. This leather expert has made luxury leather goods cutting its trademark, but behind the shock side, there is a real approach. The goal: to examine the quality of the tanned skin and the making of the piece. By then estimating the cost of raw materials and labor in order to allow consumers to form an opinion on the price of the bags. A more mindful way to shop for those more interested in the quality than the hype of a bag. We forgive him (almost) for butchering accessories that we can’t afford. It’s always better than tearing a Chanel to pieces for the sole purpose of making views!
