The German-Turk is always associated with the Blaugrana – but he wouldn’t necessarily fit into Xavi’s Mittelfed.
Erling Haaland has become incredibly quiet lately – at least by his standards. The Norwegian has scored just one goal in the last four games. That’s a frightening number for a striker who has almost reached the 60-goal mark this season.
City, meanwhile, have had another world-class player in their place. Ilkay Gundogan, meanwhile, has four goals and two assists, including a brace against Everton.
His first goal against the Toffees was a finish that Haaland would envy him for: a skillful acceptance with his right thigh, a half turn and a quick flick to the bottom corner – all without looking up.
This run revealed Gündogan’s goalscoring instincts. But he also has other sides: Gündogan as a playmaker, calm ball distributor and dribbler.
Pep Guardiola has transformed an injury-prone player into a near-perfect attacking midfielder. But his time at the Etihad Stadium seems to be coming to an end. His contract expires after seven years with Citizens and FC Barcelona are very interested.
But even if they want him, Gundogan is not the player the Blaugrana should bring. At Man City he is a seasoned icon. Yes to Barça it just doesn’t fit.
