Latvian Foreign Minister and President-elect Edgars Rinkevics believes that Hungary is not the main obstacle on Ukraine’s path to NATO, but rather the uncertainty of the position of a wider range of countries.
About this he said in an interview with European Pravda.
Rinkevics noted that the main obstacle to Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance is an internal discussion in NATO, and not Ukraine itself or Russia’s unspoken “veto”.
“The reason is that right now, in many capitals of NATO member states, there is not a clear enough understanding of what to do with the situation when a belligerent state joins the Alliance, and what this means in the context of Article 5. To put it bluntly: this is the main question. And this is the question that many member states cannot answer, and until they have this answer for themselves, they will not be able to answer at the same table and other NATO members,” said Edgars Rinkevics.
In his opinion, if this position were formed, then even the opinion of official Budapest should not be an obstacle.
“I believe that when it comes to the final decision-making process, I believe that all allies, without exception, will agree. But now this key issue is an obstacle. There is a country in the war. There is a “fifth article” of NATO. states, and a lot of states are trying to understand what this means for the Alliance. In many capitals, there is still no good answer to this question, and we need to understand this, “he added.
Rinkevics noted that Latvia sees the future of Ukraine in NATO and for its part will do everything possible to make this happen.
Edgars Rinkevics also shared his expectations from the summit in Vilnius.
