Milton Pérez knows what it’s like to sleep on the street and have nowhere to go. He also knows that homeless shelters are sometimes not as safe as they should be. He knows that because he himself was homeless.
Pérez, who is closely familiar with the difficulties that homeless people face, explained how long he had been living on the streets: “More than five years. Until recently, I have been living in an apartment for 5 months.”

And after the attacks of a subject responsible for shooting two homeless men in Downtown Manhattan and others in Washington DC, Pérez expressed his opinion about it: “It kind of disgusted me. It made me sick for a second. I wasn’t doing anything, just sleeping. Any human being has a certain peace when they are sleeping.”
Those who have experienced homelessness say living on the streets is dangerous, but many would rather sleep there than go to a shelter.
“Of the things that are said publicly or when people ask about violence, those things happen but not every day. In my opinion, what I have seen is mistreatment and lack of respect,” explains Pérez.

Campaigners say more individual housing is needed instead of what many shelters are currently providing. And according to Taysha Milagros Clark, a spokeswoman for the Coalition for the Homeless: “There are several people in a room. Anyone would worry about that because you don’t know the others.”
Many activists in favor of the rights of the homeless, like Pérez, consider that it is necessary to have more compassion for those who find themselves in this situation: “Recently, they are taking people from the train to the street, in the middle of winter. meaning,” adds Pérez.
Perez also hopes to see laws and policies that help homeless New Yorkers more, and as for last week’s horrific attacks, he says he’s relieved that the suspected killer has been arrested: “I wish he would pay in a way. I leave justice.”
