Few metropolises are as dynamic on the cultural scene as New York. This is the conclusion of the latest report from UBS and Arts Economics on the role that American cities play in the art market. The Big Apple is a breeding ground for artists, but also for museums and art galleries. Decryption.

The figures speak for themselves: the United States is the locomotive of the art market. 43% of all global auctions took place there in 2021, according to le rapport « The Role of Cities in the US Art Ecosystem ». If several American cities contribute to this effervescence, New York has a lot to do with it. It hosts more than a quarter of the country’s museums (26%), unlike its rival, Los Angeles, which only hosts 7%.
Behind London and Paris
New York is also particularly dynamic when it comes to art exhibitions. The city’s cultural establishments mounted 36% of all exhibitions organized in the United States between 2017 and 2021. This is nine times more than San Francisco, Miami or Chicago.
The UBS and Arts Economics study also reveals that the Big Apple is particularly attractive to American and international art collectors. They rank it third among the cities to visit to go to exhibitions and art fairs, behind London and Paris. They also mention two other American metropolises: Los Angeles (#6) and Miami (#8).
Los Angeles takes off
If New York is the North American capital of the arts, its supremacy is increasingly challenged by Los Angeles. The cultural scene of the City of Angels has developed a lot over the last decade, both in terms of art fairs and museums and galleries. However, the latter take few risks with regard to the artists they represent. 23% of galleries in Los Angeles showcased “emerging” talent between 2017 and 2021, compared to 39% for those in Chicago. The museums of the City of Angels are just as cautious on this point, but much less than those of San Francisco and even New York.
Miami and Chicago stand out on the representation of women in the arts, a subject that has gained particular momentum in recent years. Miami is the only US city where female artists are more likely than their male counterparts to be exhibited for the first time. They are also particularly visible in the art galleries of Chicago, where 43% of the artists exhibited are women.
