Why Fuel Prices in Czech Republic are Rising: Government Plans to Increase Diesel Tax and Strong Demand After Pandemic

According to the CCS company, Natural 95 now costs CZK 36.87 on average, diesel is sold for CZK 31.20. “Gasoline will go above CZK 37, because the demand for fuel will increase due to the fact that drivers who do not drive much for more than a year will leave. Higher demand results in an increase in prices,” BH Securities chief analyst Štěpán Křeček told Práv.

Diesel will become much more expensive, as the consumption tax reduced by CZK 1.50 per liter, which was originally supposed to apply until the end of the year, will end in the future. The government wants to return the tax to the level before last June, i.e. to CZK 9.95 per liter, as soon as possible. Originally, she wanted to do this since July, but her plan to approve the tax increase in the House of Representatives did not pass quickly, and the amendment to the Excise Tax Act will therefore follow the standard route.

“It will depend on the legislative process, but we expect that the amendment could enter into force on August 1,” Finance Ministry spokesman Tomáš Weiss told Prav on Wednesday. The parliamentary budget committee recommended approving the government’s proposal on Wednesday.

Fuels are getting more expensive

Due to the consumption tax, the price of diesel will increase by CZK 1.50, even with VAT it will be CZK 1.80 per liter. In addition, the price increase caused by the weakening crown will bring another tens of pennies. This influence caused the prices of petrol and diesel to rise by around 20 halers over the last week. “Behind the price increase is the strengthening of the US dollar against the koruna. While at the beginning of May we were on the exchange rate of around CZK 21.50, now we pay about 50 halers more per dollar. This makes the import of oil and fuel more expensive,” added Křeček.

According to him, however, oil prices on world markets will not affect the price, as they have stagnated in the last month.

“During May, the price was around $75 per barrel of Brent North Sea oil, and now we are at $76. There are currently no significant news that would affect the price upwards or downwards,” added the analyst. Křeček recommends that drivers fill up in the Czech Republic when traveling abroad, because prices at gas stations are higher, especially when traveling to the south or west. For example, in Germany or Italy, gasoline costs more than six crowns per liter.

Diesel is also six crowns more expensive in Germany, and even eight in Italy. With a full 50 liter third-generation Škoda Octavia tank, motorists will now save 400 crowns when refueling in the Czech Republic compared to Italy.

On the contrary, gasoline is now cheaper in Slovenia and in Croatia, which is popular with tourists. However, diesel is more expensive in both countries.
