Why Fuel is Cheaper in the Czech Republic and What it Means for Drivers

An unprecedented thing happened. At the beginning of this year, fuel in the Czech Republic is far and away the cheapest. Even compared to Poland, where not so long ago people went not only to buy food, but also to refuel, the prices of gasoline and diesel can be envied. The Czechs understandably use it a lot and fill their tanks to the brim. They know that fuel prices go up and down and in a few weeks everything can be different again.

Is it really cheap?

But if we take a closer look at all this, we will find that there are no reasons for cheering here. Firstly, fuel still cannot be described as cheap. The price of around 35 crowns per liter is quite high from a historical point of view, and it is reasonable that today we actually consider it advantageous. After all, not long ago we were refueling at prices starting with two. But it is a big question whether we will ever return to it.

The prices at Czech gas stations are also suddenly not more favorable because domestic businessmen think that they will make it easier for the Czechs. It’s more of a combination of factors. In Poland, for a long time, there were somewhat dumping prices, with which the state helped its citizens and, indirectly, Czech drivers to overcome high inflation. But apparently that has definitely ended and the prices there have leveled off.

In addition, the Czech koruna weakened against the zloty, so fuel in Poland became more expensive for us, but not by that much for drivers there. And there is another interesting reason. Unlike the Czech Republic, the neighbors cut themselves off from Russian oil to a much greater extent. We usually talk loudly, but in the end we still take the raw material.

Bad for cars

Drivers’ joy at cheaper fuels should also be dampened by a novelty that has been in effect since the beginning of this year, namely the fact that the new E10 gasoline, which contains twice as much bio-component as before, has taken over Czech pumps. Previously, this gasoline was optional and cost less, but today it is mandatory and certainly not cheap.

Unfortunately, it turns out that this gasoline is not at all suitable for older vehicles, or engines, of which there are still a large number in the Czech Republic. No one even hides the fact that it can damage them in a rather serious way.
