In scientific terms, various eating disorders (EDs) are disturbances in the process of eating in the form of restricting food intake, overeating, purging behavior, and even eating inedible things.

The main conditions that are classified as eating disorders are: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, compulsive overeating disorder, avoidant/restrictive eating disorder, pathological chewing and regurgitation.

The causes of eating disorder are not fully known today. Apparently, the development of these conditions is influenced by genetic, external factors, characterological characteristics, and temperament.

Thus, in families with insecure attachment, where the emotional needs for acceptance and respect for the child are not satisfied, the child may develop low self-esteem and behavioral patterns of overcontrol as an attempt to become better.

This is also facilitated by perfectionism and adherence to strict standards in many areas.

Each eating disorder has its own diagnostic criteria, which describe the main eating pattern. What is important is disruption of vital functions, weight loss or gain, and the impact on general health. Only a doctor can reliably assess the condition.
