Much like one of the eponymous heroes, Wyatt Russell feared he was the new Captain America for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Russell starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series as John Walker, a decorated captain in the U.S. Army Rangers who is hired by the government to take over the mantle from Captain America after Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson chooses to retire the title and the iconic vibranium shield. Walker comes into conflict with Sam and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes as they battle the Flag Smashers around the world, believing himself to be better than Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers.
Alongside Mackie, Stan and Russell, the cast of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier included Erin Kellyman, Danny Ramirez, Georges St-Pierre, Adepero Oduye and the returns of Rhodey by Don Cheadle, Helmut Zemo by Daniel Brühl and Sharon Carter by Emily VanCamp. Having premiered in early 2021, the series has received largely positive reviews from critics, with praise directed at the chemistry between Mackie and Stan as well as Russell’s performance, action sequences and social commentary. Although much of its cast was acclaimed, one star was initially hesitant to join The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In a recent interview with ColliderWyatt Russell reflected on his MCU tenure with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Russell recalls being initially worried about being the new Captain America and hesitant to audition for the show, but then felt comfortable when told how his character was different from the hero of Chris Evans. Check out what Russell shared below:
“I feel like every actor says that, but at first I was very hesitant. If you were a Lodge 49 fan, you weren’t going, “This guy is going to play Captain America.” I had the same reaction. I thought, ‘Are you sure you want me to play Captain America?’ You don’t know why you’re auditioning, so I was like, “Okay, I’ll audition and see what it’s like if I get it.” And then I realized that and I was like, ‘Okay, cool. Who am I playing with?’ I had a meeting with Kari Skogland and Zoie Nagelhout at Marvel, and they showed me a picture of Captain America. At first, I was like, “Oh, my God.” Captain America is a very difficult character to play because his moral compass always points north. He’s a difficult character to pull off. And when you have someone who was so good at it, do it, who’s so loved, you’re going, “I don’t want to play that guy. These are impossible shoes to fill. No. No way. I’m just not your man.” And then they were like, ‘No, no, no, it’s this other character.’ It turns into this anti-Captain America, bizarro Captain America world. When we started talking about it, I was like, ‘Okay, I can have some ownership over this character because I can do whatever I want with it, in a certain way.’ “
Interestingly, Russell’s reluctance to join The Falcon and the Winter Soldier because the new Captain America fits well with one of the major themes of the series. The series extensively explored Sam’s difficulty with Rogers passing on the nickname Cap to him at the end of Avengers: Endgame and later issues accepting Walker to take on the role as he proved to be a more ruthless and unwavering government agent. Marvel chief Kevin Feige even explained that the idea of making Russell the new Captain America for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stems from one of the show’s concepts in which the government is not comfortable with a black man taking the nickname, which was further explored via Isaiah Bradley and his dark history as a super soldier during the Korean War and subsequent government experiments and cover-ups.
Luckily for MCU fans and Russell, Walker won’t hold onto the Captain America title for long. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier after his brutal killing of a Flag Smasher was caught on camera. He would subsequently be stripped of the nickname and would later be hired by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and given the new title of US Agent, potentially leading to his future in the Love at first sight movie, given that he was the leader of the supervillain-turned-superhero team in one version from the comics. Audiences can revisit Russell’s time as Walker with the entirety of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier streaming on Disney+ now.
