Why Education is Vital for Migrant Integration: Initiatives by MOAS in Malta

Education is an important cornerstone for the integration of migrants. It gives them the tools they need to find their way around and encourages social connections.

One of the most important aspects is language acquisition. Good language skills open doors to employment, higher education and social interaction.

However, education for successful integration goes beyond just language. Schools can play an important role in promoting intercultural understanding. Students with a migrant background often face the challenge of adapting to a new education system. Schools can deal with these issues by offering special support programs such as: B. Bridge classes to close academic gaps and mentoring initiatives that connect students with a migrant background with peers who provide them with guidance and understanding. Education is a two-sided issue. It is not only about giving migrants the opportunity to integrate, but also about raising awareness in the host society. Programs that promote cultural awareness and understanding within the wider community can help break down stereotypes and create a friendlier environment.

Skills training courses play a vital role for migrants who need to find their way in a new job market. Vocational training and certification can provide migrants with skills that are recognized by local employers. Many asylum seekers find it difficult to translate their experiences abroad into a format familiar to local human resource managers. Resume writing and interviewing courses can teach them how to create a strong resume that highlights relevant skills and experience and provides guidance on interview techniques and cultural expectations. The courses will enable them to gain knowledge of local business regulations, marketing strategies and financial management to adapt their skills to a sustainable career path.

In today’s digital world, basic computer skills and knowledge of online tools are essential. Digital literacy training, for example, can enable migrants to navigate online platforms or productivity software. Soft skills such as teamwork, problem solving and time management are also important. Training programs can help migrants develop these skills in their new cultural environment.

In addition, recognizing knowledge, skills and qualifications acquired abroad can save migrants time and frustration with valuable experience.

Investing in the education of migrants is an investment in the future. A fully integrated migrant population contributes not only to their success, but also to the social and economic environment of the host country. Education can bridge cultures and pave the way for a more harmonious and inclusive society.

MOAS Integration Project

For this reason, MOAS has launched several educational initiatives in Malta to support asylum seekers, refugees and migrants. Our aim is to support beneficiaries on their educational journey so that they can develop their independence and have better access to local resources.

MOAS has “English for beginners“Courses offered The Fernler initiative with tablets and modems for migrant families and students to help children and full-time adult students to keep up with their studies during the Covid period, and that Family hospitality projectan initiative that aims to provide accommodation and integration support for migrants and refugees who wish to continue their secondary education.

In March, MOAS opened a new multifunctional space in collaboration with Awas (Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers). “Learning and Information Center” at Hal Far Hangar Open Center (HOC), where migrants have access to educational and development resources to promote integration.

The digital divide is a major obstacle for migrants in Malta. Basic services such as job applications, access to healthcare and applying for benefits are increasingly being handled online, leaving those without access to the internet or devices at a significant disadvantage, especially in the education sector.

The center aims to close this gap and allow migrants to integrate and contribute to Maltese society through education and skills training. We provide space equipped with desktop computers, tablets and high-speed internet, as well as traditional resources such as books, study materials and presentation technology.

NGOs and other associations can hold workshops and training courses here. The center is also available for free use outside of the planned activities. Residents can use the facilities for activities such as resume writing, self-study, online courses, and logging into essential online services.
