Jakarta (ANTARA) – Researchers from the University of Liverpool reminded the importance of educating people with dementia and their families and relatives about how to manage their financial condition and legal matters.
The warning is the result of research published in the scientific journal “Aging & Mental Health”.
The research sheds light on how someone with dementia, a disease that causes a decline in memory and thinking, faces financial and legal problems and how this can impact the ability to plan for medical expenses.
Dementia is a global public health issue that not only affects sufferers but also affects family members and relatives.
The research, conducted by the Department of Primary Care and Mental Health and the National Institute for Health Research’s Applied Research Collaboration from the University of Liverpool, explored the personal experiences of people with dementia and their families and friends.

From the results of sharing these experiences, the participants experienced tension in relationships, challenges in implementing legal agreements, anxiety caused by financial problems, and feelings of frustration.
“Managing financial conditions for people with dementia and those who relate to them is difficult, especially regarding the legal issues involved in these activities. Our research highlights that there is little or no guidance on how finances should be handled, or care paid for, which causes difficulties in implement it even where there is a legal agreement,” said Dr Clarissa Giebel from the University of Liverpool Institute of Population Health as quoted in the Medical Xpress article released on May 15, 2023.
