“Why Duty-Free Goods Have Different Packaging: The Details on Quotas and Deposits”

A visit to the duty-free shop at the airport is a cherished ritual for many travellers. The quota has been somewhat reduced in recent years, but until further notice you can take both alcohol and tobacco with you at a reduced price both out of and into the country.

In order to adapt to the quota, certain duty-free goods have a slightly different size than at Vinmonopolet, and they tend to have a slightly different appearance. The box of Aass, which a family member brought with him from Gardermoen, was the right size, but an important detail was missing: the pawn label.

Brilliant detail on the tax-free receipt

– We have boxes without a pledge mark and with their own barcode at Taxfree. It is the barcode that the machines scan for payment, says Leif Eliassen, brand manager at Aass.

The reason why two types of packaging are produced is that the boxes with the pledge logo on them cost more than those without, which you will also see on the final sum on the receipt.

This also applies to ferries to and from abroad and their Tax-free outlets.

According to Håkon Dagestad, communications director at Travel Retail Norway, which runs the duty-free shops at Gardermoen, it is common to sell beer cans without a deposit on duty-free before departure, and with a deposit stamp on arrival.

– It varies a little what we get from the suppliers, sometimes we get deliveries of boxes for export, sometimes not.

They try as best they can to have boxes with a deposit on arrival, but this is not always the case with the deliveries.

There is still no reason to let the can go straight into the bin when you have finished the beer.

– In any case, we encourage recycling.

– We adapt to what the duty-free outlets want, as long as there is a limited number of variants that we need to keep double packaging on, says Eliassen.

– In addition, it is important for us that we follow the guidelines given in the agreement we have signed with Infinitum, which operates the mortgage system in Norway.

As of today, this applies to three different Aass products in cans without a deposit label, one of which is a Christmas beer.

– These are separate item numbers with us that are ordered separately from products with a deposit label.
