Almost all of the Netherlands has now embraced the new TV series De Bauers. The second episode of the series of Frans Bauer’s family also attracted around one and a half million viewers. This made it the most watched program on Thursday and even managed to overtake the eight o’clock news. But why do we like to make so much time for French?
We had to wait twenty years for the Brabant family to return with a reality series. According to Frans, people have been begging for a return all those years and it shows. The new series is a huge success. With delayed viewing, the first episode attracted no less than 2.2 million viewers last week.
The fact that fans had to wait so long is one of the reasons for the success, according to media expert and podcast maker Bjorn Bouwens. “The series was not exhausted in 2003. As a result, De Bauers’ real-life soap has become rare TV that everyone has beautiful and warm memories of.”
“The biggest teddy bear in Brabant.”
Yet the main reason for success remains the family itself. “Who hates Frans Bauer,” says Bouwens. “He is the biggest teddy bear in Brabant. And the rest of the family also radiates warmth and coziness. That feeling makes many people want to identify with the family.”
In the second episode, Frans celebrates his fiftieth birthday. Or rather: that is arranged for him. Because if there’s one thing Frans hates, it’s turning 50. But his family pulls out all the stops. A doll in the garden, a live painter, a brass band of fans, his own party bus. And the biggest surprise: a private concert in Ahoy.
It is important that the makers portray these moments, according to Bouwens. “It is remarkable that the music Frans makes is almost no longer important. Whether you like the music or not: you look for the warm family moments.”
“It feels to viewers as if they are growing with Frans.”
According to him, the strength of this season also lies in the good and less good moments. “You really see the smiles and the tears. Frans’ mother is getting older. He has now lost his father and the children are getting older. This makes it feel for viewers who watched twenty years ago and are now in the same phase of life as if they are growing along with Frans .”
However, a new target group is also reached with the reality series, especially on social media. For example, Christiaan, the eldest son of Frans and Mariska, has 27,500 followers a big hit on TikTok. “This makes the series also interesting for young people who don’t watch television,” Bouwens explains.
“Everyone remembers the iconic Chinese scene.”
He himself also watched it twenty years ago as a 21-year-old boy from Roosendaal. “I have to admit that I even bought the DVD box set. That season was really fun. Everyone remembers the iconic scene where they order Chinese food with the whole family. Now the mix between heavy and light is better.”
The media expert has advice for the family from Fijnaart. “If they leave it at that again after this series, this will remain a mythical season.”
