From singing bowls and tantra dances to an incorrectly pruned tree: Dutch television viewers seem under the spell of the RTL dating program B&B Full of Love. According to a spokesperson for RTL, the viewing figures will only increase during the season, with an average of one million viewers per episode this week and a market share of about 30 percent. What is the secret of the television program?
In B&B Full of Love eight Dutch owners of foreign bed and breakfasts go in search of love. The third season of the program can be seen every weekday since July 7. “This third season breaks all records,” says the RTL spokesperson. Be on social media too posts with short clips from the program massively liked.
“There are a number of factors for this success,” says media journalist Ron Vergouwen. “It starts with good casting. The main characters are well chosen.”
Say Cheese
In this way, the viewer gets to know Walter, who not only has a B&B in France, but also offers space for healings, workshops and energetic massages there. He greets everyone with a hug that lasts at least eight seconds and is happy to go playful and dancing through life. Or take Martijn, who has a traditional Dutch B&B in Thailand Say Cheese runs where the menu includes bear snack and frikandel special. Or, as Martijn puts it calls, acquittal special.
Fans about B&B Full of Love
Sander Veldhuizen and Iris van Dorst from Nijmegen:
“During our holiday in Italy, we look at it every day B&B Full of Love. First to the beach and then to B&B Full of Love to look. We are totally addicted. It is very entertaining to sit on the couch and judge. We have now built a relationship with everyone. Now we really want to know how it ends.”
Stephanie Meens from Vlaardingen:
“I got everyone watching. My sister, my mother, my friend. At work and at drinks I look for people who watch it too, so I can talk about it. I always watch it with my friend during dinner, very bourgeois. I was so sucked into the program that I really sympathize with the people in it.”
Many B&B owners and potential partners are busy with spirituality this season – or muscle toughness, muscle toughness, muscle toughness. The common thread in the program is the difficulty people have in pronouncing the word.
And according to Vergouwen there are more success factors. “The atmosphere is summery and fits the time of year. The editing is good. The travel aspect is there. All those things together make this the perfect program for this time of year.”
The fact that the program feels like a soap opera also contributes to its success, says Linda Duitsland, media scientist at Utrecht University. “Because it’s broadcast every day and there are a lot of storylines intertwining, it shows the characteristics of classic soaps. We hardly see them on TV anymore because making reality is much cheaper. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love soaps anymore. “
‘Format is a golden find’
According to German, the format is also well chosen. “It combines two popular types of existing reality: dating shows and the I leave-like format of people who start a B&B abroad. That’s a golden find.”
Fans about B&B Full of Love
Tobias Verwoert from Vianen:
“It’s funny and entertaining to see how everyone approaches love differently. It’s a receptacle of extremes. And being a B&B is far from the main thing. The main thing is that it shows the differences of how love is made or how that is not done at all.”
Simone Ottenbros from Amsterdam:
“I’ve been a fan from the very beginning and can never stop talking about it. Actually, I talk about it with everyone who wants to hear it and also those who don’t want to hear it. It’s a better subject than the weather.”
Because the ages of the participants vary widely – the oldest is 68, the youngest 26 – the target group that is addressed is much larger than with most reality shows, says German.
Vergouwen is therefore not surprised that the viewing figures are only increasing. “It’s word of mouth. Everyone’s talking about it. People are eating it.”
This winter, RTL will release a winter version of the programme. “The concept is being completely exhausted. For the time being, the Netherlands has not had enough of it. The program does of course have a life cycle: at a certain point it will be ready. But it can certainly last for a number of years,” Vergouwen expects. “There is still room for improvement”, thinks German too.
