How to handle it?
Since many things can cause your dog to develop diarrhea, you may need to consult a veterinarian to find out the underlying cause before you can determine an appropriate solution.
“With so many causes that can upset a dog’s digestive system, it’s often difficult to assume a one-size-fits-all approach,” explains Bernal.
She suggests starting by rethinking what your dog has eaten or done in the past 12-24 hours. Do they have the opportunity to eat something new or something they shouldn’t?

Lippman explained, there are a number of symptoms to watch out for and immediately take your dog to the vet when there are any of the following symptoms.
- The diarrhea lasts more than a day or two
- Stool accompanied by blood
- The dog looks lethargic and weak
- Your dog shows signs of dehydration, and excessive vomiting that accompanies diarrhea
- If diarrhea is caused by internal parasites, bacterial overgrowth, or a systemic disease, the diarrhea will continue and may require medical treatment.

Lippman views, one of the steps to maintain the digestive health of dogs is to provide high-quality food. This means foods that are high in protein with healthy non-meat ingredients.
“A diet rich in high quality, highly digestible ingredients supports maximum nutrient absorption, so choose pet foods with added dietary fiber, prebiotics and a guaranteed amount of probiotics to help support their microbiome,” explains Bernal.
