The start of the Christmas festivities at Caen (Calvados) will be given on Saturday, November 27, 2021 with the traditional illuminations of the city center but also the start of the Christmas market.
This year, it will not be on Place Saint-Sauveur, which still keeps its large tree. To drink mulled wine and wander the aisles, you will have to go to the boulevard Leclerc, place du théâtre and place de la République.
Focus on Christmas lights
This year, the illuminations are in gold and silver colors and include more than 15 km of garlands and more than 700 sets and patterns placed in the streets, on candelabra and in the trees. Three synthetic trees will be placed between November 22 and November 26 at Place Saint-Sauveur, Place de la République and Square Soreth.
25 natural trees will be set up in the various districts of the city (including one in the city center: boulevard Maréchal-Leclerc / rue Saint-Jean). They will be installed from the second half of November. The illuminations begin on November 27 and end on January 2, 2022.

Why is it not taking place on Place Saint-Sauveur?
This change of location, like that of the November gourmand location, is due to the gradual change in the Friday market. From Friday November 5 to February-March 2022, traders from the Friday market will gradually migrate entirely to Place Saint-Sauveur. The market will therefore extend over the square, rue PegMANIE and the Fossés Saint-Julien, but only on the side of the Collège Pasteur. This will prevent customers from crossing the Ditches. Traders will also have more space than between the trees.
