Why does Spain forget about Asturian culture?

It’s back to a classic after the pandemic. The Observatory of Culture 2021, prepared through a survey with 358 personalities from the Spanish cultural world, draws a panorama that walks between the ignorance of the great cultural bets of the region and the sorpasso of the cultural offer from Oviedo to Gijón. Also striking is the appearance of proposals in the ranking such as the new exhibition space of Pozu Santa Bárbara de Mieres and A Lady Party in Piloña, the unique pilgrimage of Vegarrionda. The Museum of Fine Arts, the Oviedo Opera, the FICX and the Niemeyer Center are presented as the main flagships of culture in Asturias. It is striking that among the panel of experts no Asturian proposal is among the 82 outstanding in all of Spain, although some of them are objectively inferior or less ambitious. Is it due to ignorance, lack of marketing?

The report places the cultural offer of Asturias in the tenth position of the regional ranking, after Navarre and ahead of Extremadura and the Balearic Islands. Madrid, Basque Country and Catalonia dominate the list. The Principality is at the tail of the northwest ranking, after Castilla y León, Cantabria and Galicia. Murcia and the Canary Islands are the regions with the worst cultural offer. And in the analysis of the cities with the most quality and cultural innovation, Oviedo appears in the 15th position and gains four positions compared to 2019, while Gijón regresses two positions and now appears in the 18th position. The ranking of cities is chaired by Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Valencia and Bilbao. In the cities of our environment appear ahead the cities of Santander and Santiago.

In the section of the most outstanding institutions and events at national level there is no mention of Asturias despite the 82 proposals from all over Spain, which marks the weight of Asturian institutions in the national scene and also their ignorance from Madrid and the rest of Spain. The Madrid art triangle (Reina Sofía, Prado and Thyssen), the San Sebastian Festival, the Teatro Real and the Guggenheim dominate the ranks. The Artium, the Musac, the Lázaro Galdiano Museum, the Solo Collection or the Teatro del Barrio appear in a ranking in which claims the absence of the Fine Arts of Oviedo, a great unknown for what seems to be one of the great art galleries in the country.
