Why does Gmünd make art in parking lots?

Schwäbisch Gmünd. On Friday, September 20, 2024, PARK(ing) Day will take place worldwide – a special kind of art. This initiative, which was launched in San Francisco in 2005, sees artists, designers, activists and citizens transform the enclosed parking spaces into inviting meeting places and places to sit and play. This year, the focus is on the creative performances that fill Ledergasse with color, music and life.

What’s special about PARK(ing) Day

A highlight will be the live action painting by Dragana Damianović-Schachner and Toby Grey. The two artists will create an impressive canvas blindfolded and in harmony with the sounds of the urban soundscape. The performances will be accompanied by young street musicians, Johannes and Boris, who will enrich the atmosphere with their music.

In addition, the unpackaged store GD eG will offer a giant interactive game that invites visitors to take part. The social enterprise alsoeV will also be represented with an exciting campaign. All Gmünd residents are invited to get actively involved – be it with their own artwork, music, seating or simply by exchanging ideas about the future of mobility in our city.

The parking spaces will be closed during the art project.

A call to all

The PARK(ing) Day is not only a creative development, but also a call for a livable old town. It shows impressively how parking spaces in the city center can be used differently, in the interests of sustainable development and quality of life. “Let’s work together on a sustainable mobility of tomorrow that is affordable for everyone,” invites Andrzej Sielicki from the Mobility Working Group. “The Gmünder PARK(ing) Day is a step towards a people- and environmentally-friendly future of urban mobility.

In addition to redesigning parking spaces in the city center, promoting better cycling infrastructure and optimizing local transport services must also be part of the integrated mobility strategy for our city. Together we can take initiatives to improve the quality of life and rethink public space.”
