Why do Vinh Long oranges continue to fall in price?

(PLO)- The price of beautiful oranges in the garden is 3,000-4,000 VND/kg, the price of non-beautiful oranges is 1,500 to under 3,000 VND/kg.

On December 10, some selling points posted signs to rescue Vinh Long oranges for 6,000 VND/kg.

For nearly a month now, in some markets and selling points, price signs for Vinh Long oranges have been posted at 20,000 VND/3kg, 7,000-10,000 VND/kg. Some supermarkets are promoting oranges at 15,900 VND/kg.

As one of the districts that grows the most oranges in Vinh Long province, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tra On district, Vinh Long province, said that in the middle of the year, the price of oranges in farmers’ gardens is 10,000 VND. -11,000 VND/kg and currently the price of oranges purchased at the garden is 3,000-4,000 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Tam, due to cold weather in the North and Central regions, the market has reduced consumption. In addition, the orange growing area in Tra On district recently increased by 850 hectares, bringing the district’s orange growing area to nearly 10,400 hectares.

Accordingly, the total orange output this season reached about 450,000 tons. From now until Tet, the amount of oranges expected to be harvested is 15,000 tons, but currently, due to a sharp decrease in purchasing power, prices are low, not unsellable.

According to Mr. Tam, the lowest cost to produce oranges is 5,000-5,500 VND/kg. There are cooperatives that guide farmers to care for them with organic fertilizer at a cost of 3,500-4,000 VND/kg. Therefore, with the current purchase price at the garden, farmers who rent land to grow oranges will suffer heavy losses.

“Vinh Long province has issued a written warning because by 2025 the province plans to have an orange growing area of 17,000 hectares, but currently the orange growing area has increased to about 18,000 hectares. Reality shows that there are excellent orange growing models with high yields.

For example, in the past, growers harvested 30-40 tons of oranges per hectare, but now there are cooperatives that harvest 100 tons, so people rush to plant them. Supply is more than demand, output is mainly in the domestic market but purchasing power has decreased, leading to cheap orange prices” – Mr. Tam said.

Mr. Vo Van Tai, Director of Tham Tai cooperative, said that this is a favorable season with a lot of supply, so we accept cheap prices.

The price of oranges at the garden is 3,000-4,000 for beautiful goods, 1,500 to less than 3,000 VND/kg for non-beautiful goods.

Besides, there is a situation where farmers do not care enough for oranges to be stung by bees, pests… leading to poor quality oranges. They sell and sell, not all 100 orange growing households sell for 1,000-1,500 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Tai, king oranges are consumed throughout the country, in which if the North is in the hot season, the demand contributes to increasing consumption, but currently the North is cold and in the season of many fruits including oranges.

“If you add up all the costs including transportation, the price increases by 5,000 VND/kg. The price of the oranges sold in the Northern market is 12,000 VND/kg, which is not competitive with local products. This makes it more difficult to sell oranges,” Mr. Tai said.
