Congested parking lots and jerks at the exits are the everyday color of shopping centers. Why do people do this?
Parking in paid parking lots entails certain inherent connections. The most fundamental one is that the driver has to pay for parking whether he wants to or not. Drivers are usually not at fault here, although it is also possible to come across cases that they do not understand at the exit. They fumble and delay. Where a certain period of time is free, typically in shopping centers, an interesting phenomenon occurs quite often and repeatedly.
Be considerate in closed parking lots
A car standing in front of the exit barrier with flashing lights, with the door open, without a driver. The car keeps everyone else behind, drivers are honking, tension is rising, all to no avail. Who hasn’t experienced this?! On September 5, 2023, we received an e-mail from Mr. Jiří K. from Prague and we decided to publish it in full after reading it. “I was in the Prague shopping center Arkády and I was about to leave,” Mr. Jiří writes.

“I noticed a woman in a luxury Mercedes sedan coming up to the exit barrier.” And the reader continues with what everyone probably already knows. “The bolt didn’t go up, and so on the driver got out of the car, which she left with the blinkers on, the door open,“ Mr. Jiří continues. “She went to pay for parking. Knowing what would follow, I took a picture of her.’ What followed? “No sooner had the woman paid and left than an SUV arrived, this time from a BMW,” Mr. Jiří continues. “And the script repeated itself, another woman, another unpaid parking, another blocking the exit.”
The reason for the behavior? Indifference, arrogance and ruthlessness
Mr. Jiří’s remark, with which we probably cannot identify, we have no sources for it. Anyway, his email said: “I would say that only women in expensive cars who are conceited and arrogant do this.’ And reason? “Their stupidity and indifference, someone must have bought them the cars anyway and they don’t value anything.” Mr. Jiří then concludes his experience with the “philosophical” question of whether something can be done about it. Simply put, it can’t.
Does it make sense to think about the matter and ask why some drivers block the exit from the parking lot? The reasons why some drivers block the exit can be different. One of the main ones is simply indifference. Some drivers don’t think about slowing down traffic in a parking lot, when they go to pay for parking and leave their vehicle at the exit. It’s more recklessness. Another important factor may be not noticing the time limit for free parking.
In exceptional cases, the driver is not to blame. Fault?
Some drivers may not realize that they have already exceeded the time limit that allows them to park for free and try to drive away. However, they have to pay by the time they are ready to leave the parking lot. How to solve it from the perspective of a person waiting in line behind a paying driver? Calmness and patience are probably essential. Try to realize that the situation is not always intentional and drivers can simply get into an unpleasant situation. There’s no point in getting angry anyway. It could be a technical error and the person at the barrier did nothing wrong.

Perhaps it is appropriate to contact the parking staff who can help if necessary. If one decides to approach the driver who is blocking the exit, it is a good idea to be polite and avoid conflict. No one ever knows what led to this situation, a constructive approach can help solve the problem without unnecessary clashes. Especially in the case of force majeure or an error or technical problem that is not our fault. It’s a matter of seconds or minutes, and it’s worth waving your hand at.
