Why Do Planes Fly at High Altitudes? The Reason Revealed by Pilot Captain Mohammed Al Shaiban

Al-Marsad newspaper: Pilot Captain Mohammed Al Shaiban revealed the reason for flying planes at high altitudes.

High altitudes

Shaiban said, during a tweet on his personal account on the “X” platform: The main reason for flying at high altitudes is to obtain the best performance of the engines and the most efficiency, because at high altitudes the air is less dense, which results in less resistance and allows the plane to fly at high speed with less fuel consumption. And also stay away from some weather fluctuations, terrain and its effects.

Flying and noise

He added: The higher the altitude, the smoother the flight and less noise. Also, flying higher gives the pilot in emergency situations more distance and time in the air to reach the nearest airport.

oil consumption

He pointed out: An example that shows the effect of altitude on fuel consumption and time: If we fly two 787-10 aircraft with the same weights from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur, the first will be at an altitude of 15,000 feet, and the second will be at an altitude of 39,000 feet.

Fuel and aviation

He continued: The first, which has an altitude of 15,000 feet, will consume 64 tons of fuel and a flight duration of 9 and a half hours, and the second, which has an altitude of 39,000 feet, will consume 45 tons of fuel and a flight duration of 8 and a half hours.
