Why Do Planes Crash in Nepal?

the fall aircraft Yeti Airlines adds to the long list of plane crashes in Indonesia Nepal. So, why do planes crash frequently in Nepal?

Nepal may be a scourge in itself for pilots who fly through it. The mountainous terrain is a challenge in itself.

This was disclosed in a report by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal in 2019. They said that Nepal has a hostile topography and is a big challenge for pilots.

Nepal itself is home to 8 of the 14 highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest. This condition makes the aircraft difficult to navigate, especially during bad weather.

Conditions are getting worse because flights there can only be carried out by small planes capable of reaching remote and mountainous locations. According to a report by the Civil Aviation Authority, an airplane with 19 seats will be more prone to crash.

The capital city of Kathmandu is Nepal’s main transit hub. From there many small planes depart.

Then, the airport in Lukla City, in northeastern Nepal, is often referred to as the most dangerous airport in the world. Known as the gateway to Everest, the airport’s runway sits on the side of a cliff between the mountains. The end even directly adjacent to the ravine.

The risk of aviation in Nepal is greater when there is less investment in maintaining old aircraft.

In 2015, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an agency of the United Nations, made it a priority to assist Nepal through its Aviation Safety Implementation Assistance Partnership. Two years later, ICAO and Nepal announced a partnership to address security concerns.

Although the country has in recent years raised its safety standards, the challenges of aviation remain. This was proven by a number of plane crash incidents afterward.

Last year, on May 22 to be precise, the Tara Air plane had an accident. 22 passengers died in the incident.

Then in March 2018, there was also an accident when a Bangla Airlines plane was about to land at Kathmandu Airport. At that time, 51 passengers reportedly died.

Most recently, the Yeti Airlines ATR 72 aircraft crashed on a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The plane was carrying 72 people, 16 of whom were found dead.
