There is a good chance that you suffer more from flatulence and a bloated stomach at night than during the day. It is a well-known phenomenon, but where does it come from? Dragonfly is looking into it.
Nocturnal flatulence
When you have flatulence, you fart more than usual and you have no control over it. Many people suffer from this more often at night than during the day. That’s not surprising if you ask gastrologists, because completely different processes take place in your body at night than during the day. This has less to do with the time of day than with the way most people eat their meals. For many, the largest and heaviest meal of the day is eaten during dinner. A few hours, or just after, it’s bedtime. Dr. Christine Lee, a gastrologist at the Cleveland Clinic, tells SELF Shape that therefore your body has to digest the most at night.
In addition, your body is always busy with digestion during the day. The food that needs to be digested builds up from breakfast to dinner. At night, not only that dinner is digested, but also the leftovers from breakfast and lunch. “It’s an accumulation of gas,” said Dr. Lee.
Other causes of flatulence
While the above is the number one cause of nighttime flatulence, other factors may also play a role. Drinking carbonated drinks late at night, for example, causes gas formation, but eating too much fiber also causes you to fart more. Do you want to get rid of that annoying feeling? Then drink enough water and move, move, move according to Dr. Lee the answer.
