Why Do Covid-19 Patients Experience Prolonged Symptoms?

A number of people continue to be disturbed by the symptoms of Covid-19 even though they have been declared cured.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Since the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been an increase in the number of reports of some patients suffering from diseases caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection in the long term. They suffer from symptoms of the disease for months, even after recovering from the initial infection.

A new study was conducted to look at the lungs of Covid-19 victims. The investigators identified continuous and extensive damage to the lungs of the deceased patients, it was reported Reuters.

The researchers looked at not only tissue samples from the lungs, but also the hearts, livers and kidneys of 41 patients who died as a result Covid-19 at the University Hospital of Trieste in Italy between February and April this year. A professor at King’s College London who co-led the research, Mauro Giacca, said that the hearts, livers and kidneys in the patients who died had no signs of viral infection or prolonged inflammation.

“But in the lungs, the researchers found the lung architecture was very badly damaged. Any healthy lung tissue, almost entirely replaced by scar tissue,” said Giacca. Fox News, Thursday (5/11).

The findings also explain the question of why there are cases of Covid-19 patients who do not recover? Apparently, it happened because there was severe damage to the lung tissue.

“In fact, if someone recovered from Covid-19, the damage caused could be very extensive,” he said.

In addition, Giacca said, many types of cells in patients who died were still infected with SARS-CoV-2. The presence of these infected cells can cause major structural changes in the lungs which can last for weeks or months and may eventually explain long Covid-19. The term represents people who have been bothered by Covid-19 for a long time.

Research published in the journal Lancet eBioMedicine it follows up on studies that claim to identify risk factors that make patients more likely to suffer from Covid-19 in the long term. The researchers found that among patients who had long suffered from Covid-19, the most frequent symptoms were fatigue, headaches, dyspnea (shortness of breath), and anosmia (loss of ability to recognize smells).

The condition is more likely to occur in elderly patients, people who have a higher body mass index, and female patients. In addition, the study also found that patients who experienced more than five symptoms during the first week of diagnosis were associated with prolonged Covid-19.
