– When right-wing politicians like left-wing music
Why do conservative politicians keep using songs by left-wing musicians – is that ignorance or tolerance?

Once again there is a SVP video to talk about. This time because the chic hit “We Are Family” could have been used unlawfully – Youtube blocked the clip. The song has nothing to do with “We Are Family”, said SVP National Councilor Thomas Matter: He wrote the text and composed the song himself with a producer friend.
To most other ears, the chorus sounds like the Chic hit song co-written by Nile Rodgers, who was once with the Black Panthers – a Marxist-Leninist grouping. What Rodgers says about the case is not (yet) known. But it happens again and again that left-leaning musicians have prominent right-leaning fans.
Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan both tried to hijack Bruce Springsteen’s song “Born in the USA” for campaign events. Springsteen, a supporter of the Democratic Party, took action against it. Neil Young was also forced to step in after Trump repeatedly used his anti-American song “Rockin’ in the Free World” at campaign rallies. Ditto Adele, Aerosmith and REM
Another example comes from anti-lockdown protesters in different countries positioning themselves as the oppressed during the pandemic and turning Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” into an anti-mask have reinterpreted anthem. Helene Fischer, in turn, took legal action against the NPD. The far-right German party had played the song “Breathless through the night” at events.
David Cameron was also once rejected after coming out as a fan of The Smiths. Guitarist Johnny Marr tweeted: “I forbid you to like The Smiths!” Other examples are CDU/Toten Hosen (“Days like these”) or Merkel/Rolling Stones (“Angie”). There is even a dispute about techno music. DJ Paul van Dyk banned the AfD from using his track “Wir sind wir” as their anthem.
In this country, a Gölä song would probably be a good idea
In the past, the starting position was simpler. Conservatives had marches, the left had the “Internationale,” and classical music was neutral territory. With the rise of pop culture, potential song repertoire shifted in favor of progressive spirits. But why do representatives from conservative circles choose “left” protagonists? Are they ignorant, ignorant, bold – or surprisingly tolerant? A signal to undecided voters? Look, we’re not as ideological as you think we are?
Another theory relates to the language of oppression: as a representative of the anti-mainstream, Donald Trump, for example, identifies with songs that express rebellion – even if these songs come from the camp of the political opponent. The main thing is that the chorus fits.
In the case of the latest SVP election video, it can’t be because of the text, because it was changed to Swiss German. However, the problem seems to be the same for the SVP as Trump is confronted with: How many bands with earworm potential are there that are well-disposed towards the party?
Well: Phil Collins is a Tory supporter, Kid Rock supports the Republicans, and a Gölä song would probably be a good idea in this country. However, you also have to obtain and pay for the rights from these musicians.
The SVP in the election campaignPhilip doubt is co-head of the life department. He studied English and journalism.More information@delabass
