It may shake some calligraphers and decorators; It may not even be noticed by hacks: from the 2023/2024 school year, the school typeface from 1969 will no longer be taught in Austria’s educational institutions. The discontinued model is a particularly squiggly typeface that many generations in Austria learned to write with – until 1995. In that year, the then Red Minister of Education, Rudolf Scholten, introduced the new school typeface to the classroom. It was touted as “readable, easy to learn and more conveyable”. However, its predecessor was not abolished. From then on, teachers could choose how many donuts they would teach the children.
