Why did the real Máchal from the fairy tale The Devils Are Not Jokes commit suicide?

38 years have passed since the death of the actor František Vicena, famous above all for the role of the kind miller Máchal in the fairy tale S čerty najjú žerty. He died at the age of 51 when he voluntarily decided to leave this world. What was the life of an unforgettable Czech artist like?

František Vicena has been attracted to acting since childhood. He had artistic talent in his genes of him. He was related to the National Theater actor Miroslav Doležal or to the violin virtuoso and musical composer Jaroslav Kocian. František studied acting at the JAMU in Brno and then directing and dramaturgy at the DAMU in Prague.

He also taught there for several years and raised several generations of great actors. His students included, for example, Martin Stropnicki (65). “For reasons unknown, František Vicena took a liking to me. For the whole first year I practically worked only with him. At the end of the year we were told: ‘Write completely anonymously how you enjoyed the first year and what do you think of the singers. Don’t sign, just write it down. ” So I wrote like an oven that I would have liked very much if we had alternated the singers. That professor Vicena is nice, but sometimes absent and sometimes indisposed. Obviously it was immediately clear who wrote it. He was sorry, and also to me later, “confided Martin Stropnický in an interview for Divadelní noviny.

He hanged himself a few months after shooting the fairy tale

He later reunited with Vicena in a joint engagement at the Municipal Theaters in Prague. His former teacher showed no malice. “He treated me like a tolerant and accommodating colleague. Only there did I discover that he was carrying some kind of conflict within him that was consuming him. A few years later he committed suicide. It was a shock,” added Stropnický.

The actor struggled with long-term psychological problems, for which he used strong and alcohol-addicted drugs. His health gradually deteriorated until she stopped enjoying life. In the end, he decided to take a radical step: he hanged himself in the bathroom of his house. His body was found by his wife – actress Naděžda Prchalová Vicenová, with whom she had two children – when she returned from a play. Unfortunately, it was too late to save his life.

Shortly before Vicen’s death, he managed to play the role that became his most famous. There are no lines in the fairy tale With the devils played the kind miller Máchal, who is pushed to death by his sleazy wife, played by actress Jaroslava Kretschmerová (67). He didn’t live to see the first one. Also noteworthy is his character as Adolf Hitler in Jindřich Polák and Miloš Macourek’s play Tomorrow I will get up and scald myself with tea.
