Eight young people aged 16 to 22, coming from priority neighborhoods in Montluçon, and accompanied by the local Mission, agreed to work together on the creation of a fresco. And after about thirty hours of work, the young people, who had taken over the La Fontaine art and design school, completed their work.

Discover the arts and crafts
This project, set up by the local Mission, had several objectives: starting with the discovery of artistic crafts. “With this action, we wanted to change a bit of what we usually do”, explains Fanny Belin, project manager at the local Mission.
–
“Usually, we introduce them to trades in industry, personal assistance, etc. But artistic trades are also promising, and employers do not easily find takers because these trades lack visibility. ”

So to introduce young people to these trades, with real professional opportunities, the local Mission has decided to make them more concrete.
“For the realization of this fresco, each has chosen a profession that interests them and imagined it in terms of volume, so that they get their hands dirty and become themselves a little craftsmen”, presents Anne -Charlotte Jouve, the plastic arts teacher, graphic designer and illustrator, who supervised them. Working with materials, papier-mâché, cardboard, wire netting, the eight young people recreated a jewelry workshop, a mini landscaped garden, cooperage and even marble work.
“They could see that with a little DIY and very simple materials, you can quickly achieve something. They were able to have a concrete overview of these crafts … much more than with a theoretical course. It even revealed talent, ”continues Anne-Charlotte Jouve.

The need for teamwork
But this project also had another goal: teamwork. “I have been out of school for a long time,” explains Hatija, one of the young participants. “So it’s been a while since I was in a group. The realization of this fresco was therefore a challenge for her, and for all the young people.
–
“It was a way to mobilize them differently. Teach them to work together, as a team, with rigor since the fresco will have required around thirty hours of work, ”emphasizes Fanny Belin.
In a short time, they were able to carry out a common project.
–
The experience was therefore rewarding for the majority of them. “We all have different skills. So there was a lot of mutual aid in the collective, ”says Rose, another participant.
