KOMPAS.com – Borisov or 2I/Borisov is an interstellar or interstellar comet. This celestial body comes from another solar system.
Researcher at the Center for Space Science Research and Innovation at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Andi Pangerang explained that the naming or designation of Borisov using the letter I indicates that the comet came from a different solar system from our solar system.
“Simply interstellar or interstellar,” said Andi when contacted by Kompas.com, Monday (25/4/2022).
He added that the number two indicates this comet is the second comet discovered after Oumuamua (1/2017 UI).

The interstellar object can be a meteoroid or comet. Borisov is categorized as a comet, because it has two tails like comets in general and has a cometary nucleus.
“The tail in question is the gas tail which is colored according to the gas contained and the dust tail which is yellow or dusty brown,” said Andi.
Andi said, in general, comets are divided into three parts, namely the tail, body, and nucleus.
The comet’s core, also known as a coma, he continued, contains minerals, water, and other life-forming elements such as bacteria.
“Therefore, Borisoc is referred to as an interstellar meteor that may carry life,” said Andi.
