TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Pediatrician from the Children’s Health Medical Staff Group of RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo, Prof Dr dr. Bambang Supriyatno, Sp.A(K), gave an important warning that children should not cough when lying down, because it will make coughing ineffective.
In an online discussion with the theme “Your Little One Often Coughs and Colds, What’s the Solution?” which was held on Monday, Dr. Bambang Supriyatno explained the importance of a child’s position when coughing. He said that the correct way to cough is with the child sitting, half sitting, or standing, not when lying down.
According to him, when a child coughs while lying down, the cough becomes ineffective, and mucus will accumulate in the body. This can make it easier for bacterial infections to occur. If a child has a cough with phlegm, the phlegm is usually expelled through the mouth. However, if children cannot or do not yet know how to expel phlegm through the mouth, they may swallow it.
Dr. Bambang Supriyatno also discussed common causes of coughs and colds in children, especially toddlers. Allergies, such as allergies to dust or food, as well as viral or bacterial infections, are common causes of the condition.
To identify allergies in children, doctors will usually perform a panel test. Parents can also pay attention to whether there are foods or other triggers that trigger allergies in their children.
Dr. Bambang emphasized that allergies will not disappear, but can be managed. In addition, he explained that children with a blocked nose usually experience several consequences, such as an open mouth or snoring. This can be considered normal if it occurs less than three times a week. However, if a child snores more than three times a week, it is a sign that the child needs treatment. This condition can cause children to be hyperactive, not sleep well, and various other health problems.
