Why can’t a sick child be immunized? This is Doctor’s Explanation

Suara.com – Children who have a fever are not continued to get vaccines or immunizations. What is the reason?

Pediatrician of Pondok Indah Hospital, Dr. Caessar Pronocitro, Sp.A, M.Sc explained that when you are sick, your immune system is actually active against the disease.

“So when given a vaccine, the immune system cannot respond to the vaccine. Because the vaccine works to form memory or antibodies,” Caesar said in the RSPI webinar, Wednesday (1/7/2020).

He added, to form a specific memory or antibody, the immune system must be in good condition. So that it can form enough antibodies.

However, if the immune system is in poor condition, the antibodies formed will be lacking. So that the immune effect obtained from the vaccine is not optimal. That is why vaccines are better given when the child is not seriously ill, explained Caesar.

“To determine whether a child is seriously ill or mild, there are many markers. First a fever that one of the markers of the body is trying to fight infection. So that in a feverish condition it is postponed. Give the child’s body a chance to fight pain,” he said.

Signs of serious illness actually have symptoms that vary, depending on the disease, said Caesar.

“For example, severe diarrhea with frequent bowel movements, we usually treat the illness first. After recovering, we give the vaccine. If only the flu and a mild cough without fever may still give the vaccine but return to the child’s examination,” he said.

Caesar admitted, it is difficult to determine mild or severe pain if no direct examination. So the doctor still has to do an examination.
