Why Can People With Covid-19 Experience Parosmia?

Parosmia is one of the symptoms of Covid-19.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SLEMAN – Parosmia is one of the new symptoms of Covid-19. The doctor who specializes in ear nose and throat RSA Gadjah Mada University, Dr. Anton Sony Wibowo SpTHT-KL, explained that parosmia is a olfactory disturbance which makes people feel like they smell differently than they should.

“Patients with parosmia perceive odors that are not in accordance with reality,” said Anton, Monday (4/1).

For example, a fragrant rose may even be perceived differently as a bad smell or other smell. The perception of smell that appears varies, different from the smell disorder cacosmia which makes people smell bad all the time.

Symptoms of parosmia are quite common in patients Covid-19 abroad. Although not widely studied in Indonesia, several studies abroad found the occurrence of parosmia between 50.3 percent and 70 percent.

Anton revealed, parosmia can be experienced by Covid-19 patients because the SARS-CoV-2 virus affects a person’s olfactory process pathways. It can be from olfactory nerve receptors, olfactory nerves, or olfactory nerve perceptual centers.
