Why Can Corona Virus Mutate? Here’s the Expert’s Explanation

BANDUNG, KOMPAS.com – A number of countries have recently reported cases of a new mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 corona virus which is the cause of Covid-19. This new mutation is allegedly more dangerous than the previous virus.

Universitas Padjadjaran Microbiologist Mia Miranti said the corona virus is included in the RNA virus group.

“RNA is one type of nucleic acid that characterizes viruses as living things,” Mia said in an received release. Kompas.com, Monday (28/12/2020).

The results of research in several scientific journals, said Mia, stated that the RNA virus group mutated easily.

When the corona virus infects a host body, the RNA will replicate or reproduce.

“There is no replication of this virus that does not cause disease in its host, because it will take over the host cell’s working system for its reproductive process,” said the woman who is often called Mira.

Mira said, the corona virus has actually experienced frequent mutations. Mutations are carried out to adapt to the host cell.

Since it was discovered in Wuhan, China, the corona virus has mutated so that it can survive in a temperature range of 5–10 degrees Celsius.

When it spread to Iran and the Middle East region, Mira estimated, the virus had mutated again so that it was resistant to heat.
