Since 2015 Australia has competed in Eurovision. But this year, his participation will be in special circumstances because of covid-19.
In 2021, this will be Australia’s 7th participation in Eurovision. The country of Oceania was originally only to appear once, in 2015, but in the face of the enthusiasm generated by its presence that year, the experience has been repeated every year since.

In theory, only member countries of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) can participate in Eurovision. For the 60 years of the competition in 2015, the organization had broken the rule for Australia, where Eurovision has been broadcast since 1983 by the SBS (Special Broadcasting Service), always with the same success. To reward the loyalty of the Australians, she allowed their country to try its luck once. The experience was to be repeated only in the event of victory. But the country has been around ever since. In 2015, its candidate Guy Sebastian had finished fifth and the following year, Australia even came close to victory by placing second with singer Dami Im.

A pre-registered participation
This year, however, the Australian candidate, Montaigne, will not be present on stage with her competitors. She will not be able to make the trip because of the travel restrictions put in place in Australia against covid-19. But she will participate virtually. Like all the candidates this year, she had to register her performance in advance, under the conditions of a final. This initiative was taken by the EBU to compensate for any impossibility of participation because of the pandemic. It will therefore be a pre-recorded version of the song “Technicolour” which will be offered during the final on May 22 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
