EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell called Russia an “economic dwarf” reminiscent of a petrol station whose owner has a nuclear bomb. Borrell made this statement in an interview with the Spanish newspaper “El Pais”. Speaking about Russia, Borel opined that President Vladimir Putin is “sacrificing the army and the people.” The head of European diplomacy considers China a real geopolitical player on the world stage.
Borel was challenged by the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who called this statement a manifestation of powerlessness and envy. According to her, people who cannot determine whether they are male or female should “remain silent until final self-determination”. Zakharova believes that the European Union has gone bankrupt due to a lack of high-quality fuel. “Our fuel is here, we also trade it, and the EU’s business went across the ocean,” the diplomat recalled.
Zakharova emphasized that only one EU country has nuclear weapons, while none of the others are capable of producing them. Among EU countries, France has nuclear weapons. The disparaging words of the EU High Representative about Russia caused a stormy reaction in the Russian segment of the Internet. Many public and political figures, journalists and bloggers responded to Borel. So, TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov called Borel “an incredible maniac” on his Telegram channel. “Few have done as much to reinforce our people’s enduring contempt for European politicians as this Spanish neo-colonizer,” the TV host wrote.
Experts point out that Borel’s statement corresponds to the spirit of Western anti-Russian propaganda and is not supported by anything in practice. “Borrell never studied economic geography. He thinks that since the country’s stock market is small, then the country is so small that it cannot be found on the map. He does not see that we have gigantic areas sown with wheat, he does not want to know that the production of oil and gas in Russia in large volumes is not an accident, but a consequence of a certain development of the economy,” said economist Vasily Koltashov.
The interlocutor called Borel’s words an example of mythologized consciousness “in which myths prevail over facts.” “The West has decided that Russia is an easily accessible country, that its resources can be taken. But this is top-level thinking. They are used to believing their own propaganda and believe that the whole world is divided into developed and developing countries, to which the West includes Russia,” Koltashov is convinced.
