Why Blumhouse’s ‘The Hunt’ Became a Huge Flop

Most horror movie fans are probably familiar with studio Blumhouse. The American film and television production company was founded in 2000. Since then it has been working on all kinds of big franchises like Paranormal Activity, Insidious on Halloween and is also responsible for toppers such as Split, Get Out on The Invisible Man. Still, according to Jason Blum, there is also a very disappointing film.

According to founder Blum, this is about the satirical thriller The Hunt, met o.a. Hilary Swank, from Craig Zobel. The story is about a group of conservative poor who wake up in a remote place where leftist rich hunt and kill them for sport.

Reception
The theme hit the American minds in the full election battle in the wrong way. Then-President Donald Trump even spoke very negatively about the film, without having seen it. As a result of all the criticism (and the Dayton and El Paso shootings, though they had no connection to the film), Universal Studios decided to cancel the film’s release entirely.

In March 2020, about a year after the original release, the studio released the film onto the world after all. However, a few weeks later, the pandemic struck and all cinemas closed. Blum, the film’s producer, says the film already had no chance.

Impossible
Blum says the political controversy surrounding The Hunt was already too big for the film, which has suffered greatly: ”It’s a shame anyway‘ begins Blum. ”Many people had already passed judgment on the film, without knowing what The Hunt was really about…

The film did not catch on and was also a flop at the box office. For example, The Hunt costs about 14 million dollars to make, but did not even bring half of this in America. Worldwide, the film was good for about 16 million dollars. Blum sees The Hunt as the ‘biggest disappointment’ of his career.
