Why are we gaining weight? Dr. Oana Dumitrache explains what we suffer and what we have to do

  • Why do patients go to a nutritionist’s office?

Oana Dumitrache: First of all to get rid of excess weight, to regain self-confidence and image. It is clear that for the first time they think about the aesthetic aspect, without realizing the medical implications that appear with weight gain. They should know these problems, worry and try to correct them in time. Let’s not forget that health is the most important thing, not the aesthetic aspect. It is true that the aesthetic aspect is an incipient component and much more common in women than in men. The majority of people who go to a nutritionist are women, in a proportion of over 85%.

  • Why do you think people gain weight?

Simple. Because of overeating, which is often done against the background of emotional stress caused by various factors – social, family or even genetic.

  • How are Romanians in terms of weight problems?

Obesity in Romania is more common in men who are advancing in age and according to the ORO study (“Obesity in Romania”), obesity is 18.8% in Moldova, 32% in Oltenia and Muntenia, 28% in Banat and Crișana. Nationally, 21.3% of people suffer from obesity, and over 50% are overweight.

  • Is it dangerous to be overweight or obese?

Categorical! People need to understand that being overweight or obese is not an aesthetic issue. As you gain weight, the likelihood of serious illness increases. Overweight and obesity are associated with an increased risk of chronic disease: in the first place is type 2 diabetes, which is 95% associated with obesity, hypertension (60-70%), coronary heart disease, acute or chronic myocardial infarction and strokes cerebral palsy (30-35%) and some forms of cancer. In addition, obesity decreases the quality of life and life expectancy by an average of 8 years.

Most people with weight problems need to lose over 20 kilograms

  • What is the average excess weight that patients face?

Over 80% are over 20 kilograms in addition to their ideal weight.

  • But what is the ideal weight?

It is the one where the body feels very good and there is a quality of life. There is also a calculation formula, but it is indicative. Several calculation formulas have been made, but the internationally accepted one is the Body Mass Index which is calculated as follows: the weight divided by the height squared. For example, for someone who weighs 60 kilograms at a height of 1.69 m, the calculation is: 60: (1.69×1.69), ie 60: 2.85, results in 21. This formula is enabled by the World Health Organization. (WHO). The result obtained shows you how you are: under 18 = underweight, between 18 and 24.9 = normal weight, between 25 and 29.9 = overweight, between 30 and 34.9 = grade 1 obesity, between 35 and 39.9 = obesity grade 2 and over 40 = morbid obesity.

  • Those with health problems either turn to diets found on the Internet or in books, or go to a nutritionist. What do you think about non-medical nutritionists?

The opinion is simple, but at the same time complicated. Mainly, nutrition, internationally, has different degrees of schooling. The most common are nursing assistants, who take various nutrition colleges or courses for a shorter or longer period of time. But only the nutritionist is the one who goes through medical school, after which he does a residency specific to this specialty. Because, let’s not forget, diets are not given to lose weight or gain weight, but also depending on the associated diseases. There are foods indicated and some contraindicated depending on the disease, because they modify different biochemical factors in our body, practically altering their function (excess protein can lead to gout for example).

  • What do you think about the Wonder Diet?

They were extraordinary to me. Adherence to this eating rhythm educates the body to eat little and often. Once aware and implemented at national level, the medical problems at the level of the population would decrease a lot, which unfortunately lead to enormous costs in counteracting and stopping them. Better safe than sorry. We pay for health, instead of walking and dancing.

What a Wonder Diet entails

  1. Eat only between 07.00-19.00 (reference hours being 07.00, 10.00, 13.00, 16.00 and 19.00). You can choose other hours, but you must respect the interval. This is one of the most important principles in the Wonder Diet.
  2. Eat every 3 hours, daily, at the same fixed hours. In this way, the metabolism will accelerate to the maximum and this will help us to improve our health and, if necessary, to lose weight until we reach the ideal weight (be careful, however: the ideal weight is the one perceived as the ideal body, not the one on which we consider ideal).
  3. Eat at all fixed meal times. Don’t skip any meals if you’re awake at those hours. But you don’t even have to wake up earlier: the first meal of the day is the one that follows after waking up.
  4. Breaks between meals should be breaks. Absolutely nothing is consumed between meals, only plain and / or mineral water, unsweetened tea and black coffee. Pay close attention to all liquids that contain “hidden foods”. They will be considered food for the body. They are not forbidden, but must be consumed at meals at fixed hours. This category includes all natural or non-natural juices, all alcoholic beverages, coffee with milk and / or sugar / sweetener and any liquid that contains sweeteners, even if they are natural / dietary sweeteners.
  5. Eat only what is good for you and only until you are full. We have the “nutritionist” in us, we just have to listen to him. If we eat too much or if we eat something that is not good, we feel immediately, we do not like it. So we will know in the future not to be wrong. Why would we make the same mistake over and over again? We also have in us the measure of “common sense”. We know when we get tired, we don’t have to stuff everything from the plate, just because there are a few pieces left.
